BBC - Defying GravityBBC - Defying GravityIt's an unwritten rule that geeks don't have many shows they can watch with their girlfriends.

But with Defying Gravity being touted as Grey's Anatomy in space, could this be the genre crossover that paves the way to geek-love nirvana?

Set in the near future, Defying Gravity follows eight astronauts (handily for the romantic subplots, four men and four women) who embark on a mysterious six-year international space mission.

Shockingly, all is not as it initially seems, and when two of the original astronauts are brought down with a super rare heart issue, and the super intelligent HAL-like ship computer starts making the odd surprising decision, the crew begin to realise that maybe they're not the ones in charge anymore.

Oh, and there's a load of random steamy encounters to fulfill the Grey's quota.

While it's curiously devoid of the glossy supermodel style normal people (Lost, we're looking at you), the lack of star quality leaves the whole thing far from stellar. The cast are pretty but not that pretty, they tick all the ethnically diverse boxes but not in a blatant way, and there's enough sprinkling of sci-fi to please the geeks, but ultimately, everything's been so homogenised to the point that it lacks any real conviction or captivating direction.

Unfortunately for geeks and girls alike, Defying Gravity is far from out of this world.
