Newt played by Nico MirallegroNewt played by Nico MirallegroIn a shocking Hollyoaks storyline, fans will see Newt attempt to take his own life.

The teenager makes a pact with a friend to end it all when his alter ego Eli makes a return.

The soap, which is known for tackling difficult subjects, is once again breaking convention from affairs and weddings and looking at the darker side of mental illness.

Newt (Nico Mirallegro) has been battling with his mental demons ever since he was diagnosed with schizophrenia last year.

And whenever he stops taking his medicine his imaginary alter ego Eli (Marc Silcock) appears, making Newt confused and agitated.

This latest plot places Newt on the edge of sanity and on the run since he biffed up bully boy Gaz (Joel Goonan) and left him seriously injured in hospital.

Now he's hungry, skint and out of his medicine, he befriends an equally unstable homeless girl called Rae (Alice Barlow).

He saves Rae from taking her own life, but with a jealous Eli trying to control Newt's actions, the pair decide that the only way to get rid of him forever is to commit suicide.

They agree to a suicide pact and launch themselves off the side of a disused warehouse. But do they survive?

Executive producer Lucy Allen spoke about the decision to tackle mental illness again: "There was a great story pitched for Newt.

"There was also the literal reality that schizophrenia does return as drugs become less successful or patients stop taking drugs. If you're going to play a mental health issue you have to be true to the illness."

Fans will see the lead up to Newt's potential demise from the 5th October.
