Former model Melanie Sykes is favourite to take the job, with rumours that a contract has already been offered.

Mel, who shot to fame as the Boddingtons girl in the mid-90s, hosted an ITV daytime show with Des O'Connor until 2006.

She went on to present BBC1's Gene Detectives and became the face of Head & Shoulders shampoo.

An ITV source told The Sun: "Fern's replacement is a one-horse race. This Morning is determined to sign Melanie and made a formal approach today."

Mel's representative couldn't confirm the job offer, but told us: "Melanie would love to be considered for the role as she’s a huge fan of This Morning."

Meanwhile, it looks like Fern has been picked up by the BBC to present a new light entertainment show.

A BBC insider told us: "Fern is coming over to do something with us. She'll be a team captain on a new programme, but we can't say anything further at the moment."

We're happy to hear Fern won't be gone from our screens for long.
