Simon Cowell Simon Cowell As ever it was a star-studded event.

Big news of the night was Doctor Who announcing he was quitting...

And Simon Cowell’s face at losing out to Strictly.

Yes, as always a few surprises graced the stage at this years National TV Awards Ceremony held at the Royal Albert Hall.

Sharp-tongued Simon was a big winner of the evening.

After sulking about losing out in the Most Popular Talent Show category to Strictly Come Dancing, he was positively beaming at being recognised for his contribution to entertainment and talent with this year's Special Recognition Award.

We’re not sure how, but he looked truly dumb struck.

Grinning as he strolled on to the stage, he gave an insincere nod to Strictly’s win before babbling his way through his speech, with a little coy embarrassment and acknowledgement.  Bless, he does have it in him to be humble.

Another top winner of the night had to be the Beeb with Dr Who and EastEnders scooping two accolades.

Sexy Rita Simons, aka Roxy Mitchell, was chuffed to collect the best newcomer award.  She stopped and talked to us about her joy at the storylines she’s being given, and even hinted at Roxy’s fate towards the end of this year, but more about that later.

Other events of the night saw Strictly’s Austin Healey and partner Erin Boag quickly step across the stage, even though everyone thought Sir Trev might entertain us with a few light-footed turns.

Ant and Dec were in attendance despite having missed the show several times in the past and even the Stig showed up to collect the Award for Top Gear as the Most Popular Factual Programme.

A truly entertaining night as always, but for a full list of who won what, and why check out our winner’s gallery.
