In most people's world, status symbols are fairly pointless aren't they?
Tell that to those who have spent over £200,000 on number plates.
Ellen Wood's documentary is the latest in Channel 4's First Cut series, and aims to discover why an increasingly large group of buyers are passionately driven to snaffle up the most iconic and rare of number plates.
Now everyone here at TV Towers will admit quite freely to having our rather odd fancies.
We know that our stamp, comics and shoe collections are not to everyone's tastes, but the level of fanaticism shown from these subjects borders on sectionable.
Nigel Mills missed out on the 'perfect' number plate, 'N1GEL', when it was sold for a wallet-pinching £78,000. Yet like Gollum and 'The Ring' (not that we're saying he looks like a psychotic hobbit), the years apart only strengthed his fervent desire and he eventually acquired 'his precious' for almost £78,000.
You might be laughing, but nowadays it's estimated to be worth around £100,000.
Hey may be a geek, but hell if he isn't a rich one.
Ellen also follows a number of other 'Nigels' who are after the ellusive perfect plate and through a number of interviews discovers how many people now see these single strips of scrap metal as the most important thing in their lives to give them status, worth and meaning.
