Outrageous red carpet attire, superstar performances, and juicy backstage antics…

Yes, it’s that time of year again when the kings and queens of music royalty descend upon an unsuspecting European city for the MTV Europe Music Awards.

This year, join host Heidi Klum in her home country for the 2012 awards in Frankfurt, which promise to be bigger and bolder than ever with performances from the likes of Muse, Rita Ora, Taylor Swift and The Killers.

Louise Roe interview

MTV EMA 2012 - Louise Roe

On the Red Carpet

TV presenter and fashion journalist Louise Roe is no stranger to the red carpet. She’s mingled with the stars, microphone at the ready, at such swanky events as the MTV Movie Awards, VMAs, EMAs, the Oscars, and even the Royal Wedding.

This year she returns to present MTV’s live EMAs red carpet show from Frankfurt, and she gave us the low-down on what all the star-spangled fuss is about.

Give us an idea of what it's like to present from the red carpet…

Amazing! Because it’s live the whole show feels completely different to when you’re pre-recording and the adrenaline is really high for everyone involved. I feel like at any awards show red carpet, especially a music one, the fashion is just that little bit more outrageous and a little bit more rock and roll. It’s a great atmosphere.

What have been your top red carpet moments so far then?

Last year when I chatted to LMFAO I tried on those famous glasses and we did the ‘Sexy and You Know It’ dance together - that was quite funny.

And on the movie awards red carpet I had to ask lots of the guys what their favourite kind of movie kiss was, which elicited some very funny answers…

The fun I have with MTV is that they let you ask whatever you want; there are no real rules so you just get to have a real giggle.

Who would you most love to meet on the red carpet?

Johnny Depp!

I think I’d ask him about his style because he’s a massive style icon to men and women - a lot of people quote him as their favourite style icon. I don’t think he really does hardcore questions about his family and that does he, so just stick to asking about the person.

Who’s been your favourite interviewee?

Well I interviewed Chris Hemsworth, who I have a secret crush on (though I guess that’s not so secret now). He was amazing and so lovely.

How do you prepare yourself for interviewing such well-known stars like him?

I always research everyone that I know is going to come along and I think of lots of questions to ask them. For example, it’s important if they’ve just had a new album come out that you know the name of it. I think it’s almost rude to not do your research and not know everything there is to know about the people attending.

There's a real art to presenting awards shows too - the beautiful Heidi Klum has the task this year - what do you think makes a good host?

You’re totally right, it is an art. It should come across as really easy and relaxed but there’s a lot that goes in to it. I think Russell Brand is really good at it actually.

I think it’s about knowing the script really well because then you don’t feel like you’re just reading it, and also not being afraid to ad-lib a bit and roll with the punches if anything unexpected happens, which it always does. You’ve just got to enjoy it and not feel like it’s too serious - I think if you look like you’re having fun then the viewer will automatically have fun.

It's a great line-up this year! Who’s your favourite nominated artist?

I love Taylor Swift. I’m not the biggest fan of her music but I’m a big fan of her as a role model - I think she’s an incredibly positive and intelligent person for young girls to look up to.

A classic music question now - what song will always get you on the dance floor?

I think Rita Ora is awesome so if anything by her comes on I’ve got to get up. And probably a couple of oldies; I love a good 80s track. I’m always jamming out to a bit of Bananarama... Am I aging myself now?

And finally, if you could win any award in the world, what would it be?

I wouldn’t mind winning an award for living in the best beach house in Malibu. That’s my dream. Or for throwing the best barbecue ever. Those are definitely my priorities in life.

I assume we're invited to this Malibu barbeque? I was actually expecting a more style-related answer...

Well yes, of course, an award for having the best shoe collection would definitely be a close second!
