The good Doctor Who and his sidekick Catherine Tate look set to do battle at this year’s National TV Awards.
In an awards first, both have been nominated for the Outstanding Drama Performance; it’s the first time a male and female star have had to appear opposite each other.
The Most Popular Actor and Most Popular Actress categories have dramatically been scrapped in favour of this new ‘asexual’ award. Dr Who actor David Tennant has previously won two awards, but Tate is an NTA novice. Who will win?
It’s the public who make their feelings known, and vote for all the categories.
Known for being an industry indicator of what the public rate highly, all the categories refer to awards as most popular rather than best. Sir Trevor McDonald who hosts the show each year said: “The variety of nominees this year shows the remarkable range and diversity of the programmes and performers we all love to watch.”
As always the soap awards will be hotly contested, but the big talent reality shows also go head to head: Strictly Come Dancing, I’m A Celebrity, Big Brother, and The X Factor.
The awards, broadcast live, has had a few controversial moments of its own over the past 14 years most memorably when chat show host Judy Finnegan famously bared her bra in 2000, when her dress plunged lower than planned.
The 2008 show will take place on October 29 at London’s Royal Albert Hall.
